The giant boats pound through high waves, crack pack-ice, and drift in and out of fog banks on the St. Mary's River. Scenes of 45 different ships, including 1,000 footers and ocean-going vessels, glide past farms, marshes, villages and cities. Under the Mackinaw Bridge and through the Soo Locks, the freighters pass Mackinac Island, Detour, Charlevoix, Detroit, St. Ignace, Sault Ste. Marie, and Whitefish Point on their way to the port cities of the Great Lakes.

The moods of the weather are matched to an original musical score which flows with the power of wind and waves. The music and sounds of the sea carry us on an exhilarating voyage into the mythic world of freighters and the remote and rugged seas they sail upon.
