The Eastland Disaster
On July 24, 1915, at about 7:30 A.M., the proud, sleek, Great Lakes steamer known as the Eastland rolled over onto its port side in the Chicago River near the Clark Street Bridge, taking the lives of 835 people, many trapped below decks, upside down and in total darkness, helpless to escape the deluge of rushing water. Only heroic rescue efforts kept the fatality count from reaching a much higher number.

The Wreck of the Lady Elgin
In the early morning hours of September 8, 1860, the Lady Elgin, a beautiful side paddle steamship carrying more than four hundred passengers, was rammed by a schooner and sank in Lake Michigan. Nearly three hundred people perished. For over a half-century, it was the biggest disaster in Great Lakes history, and even today, it is second only to the Eastland for the greatest loss of life.

The Wreck of the Carl D. Bradley
No one believed it possible when word spread that the Carl D. Bradley, a gigantic limestone carrier with a storied history on the Great Lakes, had sunk in the teeth of a fierce November storm in 1958. Once the flagship of it's fleet, the Bradley had set numerous tonnage records, and for years had been the largest ship working on the lakes. Furthermore, she was considered virtually unsinkable.

The Loss of the Linda E.
On December 11, 1998, the Linda-E., a 42-foot commercial fishing boat, disappeared without a trace on Lake Michigan. The weather was sunny and clear, and the waters were calm. It's three-man crew, all experienced fishermen, were never heard from again.
